Enjoy a day of arts and culture in a creative Lakeland town…

Kendal’s often bypassed en route to the more spectacular scenery beyond. But it’s the kind of town that rewards a day’s wandering, with little planned.

You’ll come across its history, told on plaques along the steep streets and the narrow “yards” and “ginnels”.

In this beautiful Lake District town you’ll find galleries and museums, artist-makers’ studios and shops, excellent cafés, and a fast-flowing river with lots of birdlife

In the Museum are Wainwright’s original pen-and-ink drawings, the Friends Meeting House is home to the modern Quaker Tapestry and in the Abbot Hall Art Gallery you will discover an inspiring collection of world-famous treasures.

And so you’re off to the Abbot Hall, which is in a Grade I Listed Georgian house along the river.

Discover the art of the Lakes in Abbot Hall Art Gallery – a hidden gem located next to the River Kent in Kendal!

The art gallery has an impressive permanent collection by big names from the 18th century to the latest contemporary artists. If you’ve been wanting to see an original Schwitters since you passed close by his Merz Barn on your Langdale walk earlier in the week – this is the perfect opportunity!

There’s a lovely coffee house and, if the weather’s fine, you could have a bite to eat on the lawn next to Barbara Hepworth’s Oval Form Trezion, overlooking the River Kent.

// Kendal Artists

The afternoon is time for mooching around Kendal’s galleries and artists’ studios. In March you can enjoy the annual Green Door Art Trail, when more than 50 artists – painters, sculptors, printmakers, ceramic artists, textile artists, jewellers and glassmakers – open their studios and homes in Kendal and the South Lakes, to show their work and the environment in which they create it.

If you fancy more creative inspiration then head over to The Factory Kendal for their open studio during May. Situated just a five minute walk from the town centre, this impressive post-industrial site is home to many artists, creatives and musicians.

// Brewery Arts Centre

For an evening of comedy, cinema or music – in fact, whatever’s on at the Brewery Arts Centre – is a great way to round off this serendipitous arty day.

With 2 cinemas, a drama studio, galleries, theatre, café, restaurant and bar – Brewery Arts Centre is a hotpot for quality entertainment and a great evening out. Find out more here
